Manual Osteopathic Therapy: (MOT)

Manual Osteopathic Therapy is a form of hands-on therapy that focuses on restoring function and eliminating pain by addressing the root cause of the pain, imbalance, injury or illness. A Manual Osteopathic Practitioner is trained in the four main types of hands-on osteopathic sub-disciplines: Osteo-articular adjustments, Fascial release, Cranial-sacral techniques and Visceral Manipulation. Osteo-articular adjustments and fascial release may sound familiar as they are utilized in professions such as physiotherapy and chiropractic commonly known as Manual Therapy. Visceral Manipulation is a form of gentle manual therapy to assess and treat the viscera (organs), their position, suspension system and fascia/ligaments from which they directly attach to the muskuloskeletal system. Imbalances in the viscera and its connective tissue can be directly related to posture and postural imbalances and can impact many systems such as the muskuloskeletal, nervous, vascular, respiratory and digestive systems. The cranial-sacral system consists of the bones of the head and spinal cord as well as the membranes and fluid that surround and support the brain and spinal cord and attach directly to the bones. Dysfunction of any part of this system could have local effects such as headaches, migranes or pain along the spine from the neck to the low back or nervous system symptoms like nerve impingement or end organ dysfunction such as digestive, respiratory or gynecolocigal complaints

Some alignments that can be treated are;
- Headaches
- Neck pain
- Shoulder problems, ie frozen shoulder
- Back pain
- Abdominal pain
- Some digestive problems
- Leg pain
- Knee and ankle pain
- Sciatica
- Arms and hand pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Plantar Fasciitis

If you are in a motor vehicle accident (MVA), your doctor may prescribe massage as a part of your treatment plan. Massage can address the stress that goes with a traumatic event like a car accident. It can help address many of the sprains, strains, and other injuries common in a MVA.

If you’re injured in a MVA you should immediately visit your Family Physician. They will assess and document your condition. This serves as a baseline for your care and as evidence of your situation if you proceed to court. Based on your assessment, you’re given permission to access at most 21 treatments for your condition. (This is for the Province of Alberta, each province can have different protocol or number of treatments.)

Often, a Doctor will recommend Physiotherapy treatments first, followed by Chiropractic treatments. If you request massage, they will request that you see a specialist first. That could be your Family Doctor can be an MD, Physiotherapist, or Chiropractor. Often they are not aware of the therapeutic treatments that massage therapists offer. They would refer you to treatments that they are familiar with. This is why, you the patient, must know your rights to be able to provide this information to your Family Doctor.

Insurance companies do not have the right to determine what treatments you access. Your primary health care practitioner does, based on your requests. The practitioners provide information to you about your condition. You then have the choice to decide which services to proceed with.

Treatment Protocol

The goals of massage therapy injury recovery are to:

Reduce stress
Reduce pain and swelling
Improve circulation
Improve range of motion (ROM)
Speed up the recovery process

Immediately after a car accident, massage therapy can help you recover. Massage helps to restore balance to your autonomic nervous system. The relaxation benefits of massage can help reverse the effects that the shock and trauma of a car wreck can have on your nervous system. Massage also promotes circulation of both blood and lymph. This can help manage the swelling that usually comes with motor vehicle accident injuries.

During the first few days or weeks after the accident, massage can help. It helps by preventing the formation of scar tissue and other Myofascial adhesions. Later in your recovery, we can address specific musculoskeletal injuries. This includes whiplash, neck pain, back pain, headaches, shoulder sprains/strains, etc.

Deep tissue massage targets chronic tension in muscles that lie far below the body’s surface. Deep muscle techniques involve slow strokes, direct pressure or friction movements that go across the muscle grain.

When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement.
Our massage therapists will use their fingers, thumbs or occasionally even elbows to apply the needed pressure. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders. Some of the same strokes are used as classic massage but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain.

Unlike classic massage therapy, which is used for relaxation, deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as: chronic pain, limited mobility, recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury), repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis pain, fibromyalgia, and muscle spasms.

We understant that each treatment is unique and each visit may address differents health conditions. What you have to said, what you feel and how you see your treatment plan, is important for us. Depending on your condition and treatment plan, your massage therapist will work with you to achieve your goals.

Prenatal massages are adapted for the anatomical changes you go through during pregnancy. In a traditional massage, you might spend half the time lying face-down on your stomach (which is not possible with a baby belly) and half the time facing up (a position that puts pressure on a major blood vessel that can disrupt blood flow to your baby and leave you feeling nauseous).

But as your shape and posture changes, a trained massage therapist will make accommodations with special cushioning systems that allow you to lie face down safely (at the beginning of your pregnancy). Or you might lie on your side with the support of pillows.

A massage is one of the ultimate forms of self-care. Allowing you to spend one hours or more to destressing, relaxing, and relieving muscular soreness will benefit you mentally, emotionally, and physically. hot Stone massage involves the use and placement of basalt River rock on different points of the body. The rocks are heated before use and the massage therapist can then apply deeper pressure to areas of concern without causing any discomfort.

Basalt river rocks are the most commonly used stones during this type of massage because they are smooth from the river’s current and they hold heat well. They are typically made of volcanic rock which enables them to heat quickly and retain that heat for an extended period. Before treatment, the rocks are heated in a professional heater to 110°F to 145°F.

This type of massage allows you to enter deeper into a state of relaxation as the therapist works to relieve muscle pain and tension. The heat within the rocks relaxes the muscles, making them more pliable. Once you are free of some of the tension that you walked in, your massage therapist can release the rest of it during your session. Our hot stone massage combines both traditional massage techniques with those that are used during this treatment. During this massage, your massage therapist will prepare the hot stones for treatment and will typically place them strategically down the center of the back along the spine. The hot stones can also be placed on the stomach, the feet, the chest, the face, and even the toes and the palms of your hands if needed.

The placement of the stones can help relieve pain in the problem areas. Before your session, your massage therapist will discuss your concerns and determine the best location for the stones based on your needs and their evaluation of your physical condition.

Meet Jason (Khaled) Al Kountar – Supporting Your Body’s Natural Ability to Heal

At Mahalo, we believe that healing isn’t just about treating symptoms—it’s about supporting the body’s natural ability to restore balance, recover from pain, and function at its best. As a Manual Osteopathic Therapist, I integrate this philosophy into every treatment, helping clients achieve better movement, alignment, and long-term wellness.

I am a proud member in good standing with the Canadian Massage and Manual Osteopathic Therapists Association (CMMOTA) and have been a healthcare provider for over four years. My goal is to help people find relief, restore mobility, and regain confidence in their bodies by addressing the root causes of pain and dysfunction.

A Holistic Approach to Osteopathy

I approach every treatment with the understanding that the body is a single, interconnected system. My work is based on four key principles:

  • The body functions as a whole – Pain or dysfunction in one area can impact the entire system.

  • Structure and function are deeply connected – Misalignments can lead to pain and restricted movement, but restoring balance improves function.

  • The body has natural self-healing mechanisms – With the right support, the body can repair and regenerate itself.

  • Gentle, hands-on techniques encourage recovery – My treatments are designed to help the body restore its natural rhythm.

Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain, an injury, or postural imbalances, my approach is designed to bring relief and improve function while respecting the body’s natural healing process.

Living the Mahalo Vision

At Mahalo, we believe in holistic, patient-centered care, and I bring this mindset into my practice by:

  • Listening to each client’s unique needs and tailoring treatments accordingly.

  • Providing a calm, welcoming environment where healing can take place.

  • Educating and empowering clients to understand their bodies and make choices that support long-term wellness.

A Passion for Movement & Balance

When I’m not in the clinic, I love staying active, spending time outdoors, and continuing to learn about the human body. I believe that movement is essential to health, and I encourage my clients to find ways to stay active, pain-free, and connected to their bodies.

Let’s Work Together

If you’re looking to reduce pain, improve mobility, or restore balance, I’m here to help. I look forward to being part of your wellness journey at Mahalo.

A Healing Approach Rooted in Compassion & Expertise

Whether it’s through massage therapy, energy work, or simply holding space for my clients, I believe in creating an environment where people feel nurtured, heard, and truly cared for.

Your Wellness Journey Starts Here

A Thoughtful & Personalized Approach to Massage Therapy

Every client comes in with different needs, and I take the time to listen, assess, and create a treatment plan that supports their unique goals. My approach is hands-on, focused, and intuitive, always ensuring that clients receive the care they need.

I specialize in:

My dear Clients,

First and foremost, I want to say thank you—from the bottom of my heart. For the past 10 years, you have trusted me with your care, supported my passion, and allowed me to be part of your journey to wellness. It has been an incredible decade of learning, growing, and connecting with so many amazing people, and I am beyond grateful for every moment.

Since 2023, I have been on my own journey to regain optimal health, which has made my schedule more limited than usual. I truly appreciate your patience and understanding as I work hard to get back to my full capacity. I also want to apologize in advance if we ever need to make changes to your appointment—I promise I am doing everything I can to be fully present and provide you with the best care possible.

As my ability to see patients remains limited, I am also embracing another important role—growing as a leader for our team and community. I am working hard to make both of our locations even better, focusing on what truly matters: promoting wellness, supporting our community, and creating a space where people feel cared for, valued, and empowered in their health journey.

If you are looking for an appointment, I wholeheartedly invite you to:

  • Join my waiting list for St. Albert.
  • Visit our new Downtown location, Studio J by Mahalo, and experience a little escape with some well-deserved care.
  • Meet our incredible team of therapists at Mahalo—they are not only talented but also share the same passion for wellness and care that I do.

I may not always be available for treatment, but I am always around, present, and more than happy to share a coffee, tea, and a good conversation whenever you stop by. Your support and trust mean the world to me, and I look forward to seeing you soon.

With Love and deep gratitude, Anamaria

About Me

I have always believed in the power of human connection, hard work, and the body’s natural ability to heal when given the right care. My journey into massage therapy began when I moved to Alberta in 2013, and from the very start, I knew this was more than just a career—it was my calling.

For me, massage is not just about addressing pain or tension; it is about honoring the whole person—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Every individual has their own unique story, and I take great care in listening to what you need, how you feel, and what goals you have for your health.

I believe in a holistic approach—one that respects your body and mind while integrating advanced techniques to help you heal, move, and feel better. I work with dedication, heart, and deep respect for every client, and there is truly no greater reward than seeing you walk out feeling lighter, freer, and more at peace.

I am honored to have spent the last 10 years on this journey with you, and I look forward to continuing to support your wellness for many more years to come.
