Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine
Acupuncture is a therapeutic modality of healing, which involves inserting thin, sterile needles into your skin at various depths to stimulate acupuncture points in your body. 14 Meridians or Channels that cover the entire body. There are 365 classical Acupuncture points associated with the 14 Meridians. points have been described, most of which are located on one of the main meridians, or energetic pathways. Obstructions can occur along the meridians, due to physical and emotional stress, poor nutrition, infection or injury.
Acupuncturists are extensively trained to insert acupuncture needles into acupuncture points to stimulate the meridians, unblock the flow of energy, and facilitate healing. Acupuncture integrates, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) philosophy with anatomy, physiology and pathology, to relieve pain and improve your holistic health and wellness.
In addition to using tiny needles, acupuncturists also can use cupping, electrostimulation, heat lamps (red light), gua sha, moxa and tuina.
At MAHALO, all our acupuncturists are registered by the College and Association of Acupuncturists of Alberta-CAAA, a government regulated body that oversees the acupuncture profession.
Manual Osteopathy
Manual Osteopathic Therapy: (MOT)
Manual Osteopathic Therapy is a form of hands-on therapy that focuses on restoring function and eliminating pain by addressing the root cause of the pain, imbalance, injury or illness. A Manual Osteopathic Practitioner is trained in the four main types of hands-on osteopathic sub-disciplines: Osteo-articular adjustments, Fascial release, Cranial-sacral techniques and Visceral Manipulation. Osteo-articular adjustments and fascial release may sound familiar as they are utilized in professions such as physiotherapy and chiropractic commonly known as Manual Therapy. Visceral Manipulation is a form of gentle manual therapy to assess and treat the viscera (organs), their position, suspension system and fascia/ligaments from which they directly attach to the muskuloskeletal system. Imbalances in the viscera and its connective tissue can be directly related to posture and postural imbalances and can impact many systems such as the muskuloskeletal, nervous, vascular, respiratory and digestive systems. The cranial-sacral system consists of the bones of the head and spinal cord as well as the membranes and fluid that surround and support the brain and spinal cord and attach directly to the bones. Dysfunction of any part of this system could have local effects such as headaches, migranes or pain along the spine from the neck to the low back or nervous system symptoms like nerve impingement or end organ dysfunction such as digestive, respiratory or gynecolocigal complaints
Some alignments that can be treated are;
- Headaches
- Neck pain
- Shoulder problems, ie frozen shoulder
- Back pain
- Abdominal pain
- Some digestive problems
- Leg pain
- Knee and ankle pain
- Sciatica
- Arms and hand pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Plantar Fasciitis

Motor Vehicle Accident Massage treatments
If you are in a motor vehicle accident (MVA), your doctor may prescribe massage as a part of your treatment plan. Massage can address the stress that goes with a traumatic event like a car accident. It can help address many of the sprains, strains, and other injuries common in a MVA.
If you’re injured in a MVA you should immediately visit your Family Physician. They will assess and document your condition. This serves as a baseline for your care and as evidence of your situation if you proceed to court. Based on your assessment, you’re given permission to access at most 21 treatments for your condition. (This is for the Province of Alberta, each province can have different protocol or number of treatments.)
Often, a Doctor will recommend Physiotherapy treatments first, followed by Chiropractic treatments. If you request massage, they will request that you see a specialist first. That could be your Family Doctor can be an MD, Physiotherapist, or Chiropractor. Often they are not aware of the therapeutic treatments that massage therapists offer. They would refer you to treatments that they are familiar with. This is why, you the patient, must know your rights to be able to provide this information to your Family Doctor.
Insurance companies do not have the right to determine what treatments you access. Your primary health care practitioner does, based on your requests. The practitioners provide information to you about your condition. You then have the choice to decide which services to proceed with.
Treatment Protocol
The goals of massage therapy injury recovery are to:
Reduce stress
Reduce pain and swelling
Improve circulation
Improve range of motion (ROM)
Speed up the recovery process
Immediately after a car accident, massage therapy can help you recover. Massage helps to restore balance to your autonomic nervous system. The relaxation benefits of massage can help reverse the effects that the shock and trauma of a car wreck can have on your nervous system. Massage also promotes circulation of both blood and lymph. This can help manage the swelling that usually comes with motor vehicle accident injuries.
During the first few days or weeks after the accident, massage can help. It helps by preventing the formation of scar tissue and other Myofascial adhesions. Later in your recovery, we can address specific musculoskeletal injuries. This includes whiplash, neck pain, back pain, headaches, shoulder sprains/strains, etc.
Deep Tissue Massage / Therapeutic
At MAHALO, we consider all of our Massage Therapy Treatments to be Therapeutic. Your time and resources are valuable, so we pride ourselves in ensuring you get a treatment that gets results and meets your needs every time that you come to see us.
Deep tissue massage targets chronic tension in muscles that lie far below the body’s surface. Deep muscle techniques involve slow strokes, direct pressure or friction movements that go across the muscle grain.
When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement.
Our massage therapists will use their fingers, thumbs or occasionally even elbows to apply the needed pressure. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders. Some of the same strokes are used as classic massage but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain.
Unlike classic massage therapy, which is used for relaxation, deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as: chronic pain, limited mobility, recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury), repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis pain, fibromyalgia, and muscle spasms.
We understant that each treatment is unique and each visit may address differents health conditions. What you have to said, what you feel and how you see your treatment plan, is important for us. Depending on your condition and treatment plan, your massage therapist will work with you to achieve your goals.
Swedish / Relaxation Massage
At MAHALO, we consider all of our Massage Therapy Treatments to be Therapeutic. Your time and resources are valuable, so we pride ourselves in ensuring you get a treatment that gets results and meets your needs every time that you come to see us.
Swedish massage is one of the most common types of massages you can get. It is performed to energize the body and improve overall health. This type of massage involves techniques that are a great way to relax and unwind. This massage involves manipulating the muscles and joints to relieve stress or pain in a more gentle and relaxing way promoting blood circulation.
Prenatal / Pregnancy Massage
At MAHALO, we consider all of our Massage Therapy Treatments to be Therapeutic. Your time and resources are valuable, so we pride ourselves in ensuring you get a treatment that gets results and meets your needs every time that you come to see us.
Prenatal massages are adapted for the anatomical changes you go through during pregnancy. In a traditional massage, you might spend half the time lying face-down on your stomach (which is not possible with a baby belly) and half the time facing up (a position that puts pressure on a major blood vessel that can disrupt blood flow to your baby and leave you feeling nauseous).
But as your shape and posture changes, a trained massage therapist will make accommodations with special cushioning systems that allow you to lie face down safely (at the beginning of your pregnancy). Or you might lie on your side with the support of pillows.
Cupping with Therapeutic Massage
Cupping therapy is an ancient healing technique that some people use to ease pain. A provider places cups on your back, stomach, arms, legs or other parts of your body. A vacuum or suction force inside the cup pulls your skin upward.
Cupping therapy is a form of traditional medicine that originated in China and West Asia. People have practiced this method for thousands of years. Cupping uses suction to draw blood to or away from specific areas of your body. People mostly use cupping to relieve conditions that cause pain. Some people say it also helps with chronic (ongoing) health issues.
Cupping may ease symptoms of:
Arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis.
Back pain, neck pain, knee pain and shoulder pain.
Asthma and other breathing issues.
Carpal tunnel syndrome.
Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders like irritable bowel disease (IBD).
Headaches and migraines.
High blood pressure (hypertension).
Fire cupping with Therapeutic Massage
Cupping increases blood circulation to the area where the cups are placed. This may relieve muscle tension, which can improve overall blood flow and promote cell repair. It may also help form new connective tissues and create new blood vessels in the tissue. Fire cupping is an alternative, non-invasive treatment technique that uses special cups placed on the skin to encourage blood flow to damaged areas. This unique therapy is often recommended to patients who suffer from muscular pain, joint pain, skin problems, and/or respiratory disorders.
While fire cupping may be recommended to patients with specific musculoskeletal conditions, it is ideal for any patient who wishes to heal his or her soft tissue injuries and reduce overall pain and inflammation.
Graston with Therapeutic Massage
Soft tissue injuries can be debilitating and frustrating. Graston Technique (GT) therapy is successful in effectively treating all soft tissue conditions, whether they are chronic, acute or post- surgical. GT therapy can help you enjoy life again.
Our unique technique and instruments enable the treatment of scar tissue and fascial restrictions during rehabilitation that allows for faster rehabilitation and with greater success when the goal is restoring range of motion, eliminating pain, and restoring normal function.
Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) Massage
At MAHALO, we consider all of our Massage Therapy Treatments to be Therapeutic. Your time and resources are valuable, so we pride ourselves in ensuring you get a treatment that gets results and meets your needs every time that you come to see us.
The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are found on each side of your face and allow your jaw to chew, express facial features and move. The temporomandibular joint dysfunction symptoms include chronic headaches, pain while chewing, and stress clenching or grinding your teeth during sleep.
Hot Stone Massage
A massage is one of the ultimate forms of self-care. Allowing you to spend one hours or more to destressing, relaxing, and relieving muscular soreness will benefit you mentally, emotionally, and physically. hot Stone massage involves the use and placement of basalt River rock on different points of the body. The rocks are heated before use and the massage therapist can then apply deeper pressure to areas of concern without causing any discomfort.
Basalt river rocks are the most commonly used stones during this type of massage because they are smooth from the river’s current and they hold heat well. They are typically made of volcanic rock which enables them to heat quickly and retain that heat for an extended period. Before treatment, the rocks are heated in a professional heater to 110°F to 145°F.
This type of massage allows you to enter deeper into a state of relaxation as the therapist works to relieve muscle pain and tension. The heat within the rocks relaxes the muscles, making them more pliable. Once you are free of some of the tension that you walked in, your massage therapist can release the rest of it during your session. Our hot stone massage combines both traditional massage techniques with those that are used during this treatment. During this massage, your massage therapist will prepare the hot stones for treatment and will typically place them strategically down the center of the back along the spine. The hot stones can also be placed on the stomach, the feet, the chest, the face, and even the toes and the palms of your hands if needed.
The placement of the stones can help relieve pain in the problem areas. Before your session, your massage therapist will discuss your concerns and determine the best location for the stones based on your needs and their evaluation of your physical condition.
Aromatherapy with Therapeutic Massage
Aromatherapy and massage is used for a variety of different reasons, including relaxation, pain management, and improved mood. These are also some of the basic benefits of massage therapy. Adding essential oils is thought to enhance such benefits. Through massage and aromatherapy we incorporate nature and ancient healing arts to restore and nurture ourselves to wellness and harmony. The massage therapist might diffuse an essential oil in the room during your session or they might add a few drops of oil to massage lotion and apply it directly to your skin.

Pediatric Massage Treatments
Pediatric MT, defined as the manual manipulation of soft tissue intended to promote health and well-being in children and adolescents, can be applied with a wide range of variability in terms of pressure, pacing, and selected modality. The pacing with which the treatment is applied can be substantially modified with the goal of increasing or decreasing stimulation through the use of faster or slower movements. Site restrictions may make one area of the body unavailable for MT, whereas other areas are safe to massage.
A wide variety of MT modalities exist, each providing suggested benefits. These include therapies such as swedish, sport, cranial sacral, myofascial release, neuromuscular, trigger point, lymphatic drainage, reflexology and many more. Particular massage techniques and modalities have either stimulating or calming effects and a range of healing outcomes.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage / Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage
Manual Lymphatic Drainage-MLD aims to gently and rhythmically move the lymph through the body, especially swollen areas of the body, relieving pressure and enhancing the functioning of the immune system. As both a preventative and remedial technique, MLD can be used for a wide range of purposes including faster recovery from injury, reduction of swelling and discomfort from pregnancy, and strengthened resistance to illness.
Scalp and Foot Massage
Reiki
Reiki is the Japanese term for Universal Life Energy, an energy that flows within and
around us.
Stressors and imbalances in our lives can deplete and disrupt the flow of life force
energy and result in various health issues.
During a Reiki session, the practitioner receives the Universal Life Energy and transfers it to the client through a gentle hands-on or hands-off approach.
This spiritual energy healing practice activates, releases or transforms energy on all levels (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual) to restore balance, promoting a state of harmony and well-being.
